what would cause the rear tires to shapen, almost like paddle tires on a four-wheeler, on my vw golf?

i have a 95 vw golf and the rear tires are cupped bad on the tread from wall to wall about every six inches or so. its my winter car and i havent put it on the road yet, just wondering if new tires and most likely an allignment would last awhile? or would the tires go bad quick? allignment necessary?

this is a common rear alignment problem on front wheel drive vehicles. there are 2 solutions. buy 2 tires for the front, move the front to the rear (if they’re good), and get a 4 wheel alignment. or, buy 4 tires get a 4 wheel alignment and rotate the tires every 7-10k miles.

It’s either worn rear shocks/struts or/ and possible and lack of rotation every other oil change. Once this pattern develops in the tires, it will not go away. You will need to purchase two new tires and probably replace the rear shocks, they are actually called specialty shocks.

I have had this happen due to bad shocks, struts.
I would replace the shocks and rotate or replace the tires.November 9th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
