Is it legal to keep your balls warm or insulated during a round of golf?

kenny_scarface asked:

With the winter months coming up, I was wondering if it was legal to have a way to keep my ball warm during a round. No bad jokes, I'm serious.

Yes it is legal. Many times Pro’s that I caddie for have me keep one or two balls in my pockets to keep them warm. It is a good way to have good compression off the tee box. However…remember that you have to keep that same ball in play.

It is totally legal to do so.

As the other poster mentioned, some caddy will put the ball in their pockets.

At times, they would pre-warm it up in their bag which is much warmer than the windy conditions.

You know by now, that it’s legal. So this winter, try using two hand warmers. One for you and one for your golf ball. Keep one in your hand as you play. Keep one in each of the other hand warmers.

Kenny, do not listen to any of these other answers. Sorry to be harsh, but most of them are very wrong. Using any type of artificial warmers to heat your balls is considered a violation of rule 14-3. The rule is very vague, but essentially states “Except as provided in the Rules, during a stipulated round the player must not use any artificial device or unusual equipment, or use any equipment in an unusual manner.”

This is what is stated in the current decisions on the rules of golf!:

    “14-3/13.5 Golf Ball Artificially Warmed
    Q. Is the use of a golf ball that was purposely warmed during a stipulated round with a golf ball warmer, hand warmer or any such device a breach of Rule 14-3?
    A. Yes. Use of a ball that has been purposely warmed during a stipulated round with an artificial device constitutes a breach of Rule 14-3. However, it would not be a breach of Rule 14-3 to use a ball that was artificially warmed prior to the stipulated round. (Revised)”

Warm your balls before the round and insulate them, but you cannot warm them during the round!
