How much does it cost to get into golf?

iisasnowboarder asked:

i snowboard in the winter, but i dont really have anything i do in the summer. I skateboard, but i kinda suck at it, and use it for transportation. i've golfed a couple times, (technically i was trespassing on the cource, cause i was joining my friends already on it) and im not half bad at it. how much does it cost to really get into golf, instead of trespassing and borrowing clubs now and then?

just like anything, it depends on how much you want to spend…you can buy cheaper (good enough) clubs at Wal-Mart or Academy for about 150 bucks…or you can spend thousands of dollars buying the latest and “best” clubs and equipment. eBay has a lot of good used clubs you can buy…it is very addictive and you will justify in you own mind how much you are willing to spend based on your level of interest in the game….i got a whole set of brand new Taylor made irons for 350.00 on eBay…the green fees is what gets expensive over time….good luck….

Start by going to a range first. That will cost about $ 4-10 for balls. Just buy your own driver. Get a used one or a cheap new one for about $25-$35.

See if you like it, if so, then go get your clubs. A set of spalding clubs is about $300. That is good enough for a beginer, most people won’t outrgow a cheap pair of clubs.

Courses start at about $65 a round.

Honestly, it totally varies. There are those who want to get the best equipment because they think it will make them get better faster. If you’re that kind of person than you’re looking at close to 4 digits… So as you can see it can be real expensive. I’m just like you, I ski in the winter and play soccer in the summer, but wanted something a little less physically tiring. Anyways, I used craigslist and bought some used stuff. Also in golf, you’ll get better if you by clubs that suit your handicap. Being that your new, it’ll be high, so you’ll want a forgiving set of clubs… I guess point being, I’d purchase a set of used clubs (either as a set or as pieces). But like I said, you’ll need some irons, a putter, you might not need a driver, but that’s up to you. I’d invest in a set with hybrids, they’re much easier to hit than the 3-4 irons… So all in all you can find a decent set of clubs (whole package) for under $200 if you look hard enough… Have fun and remember don’t look up…

great deals on older models of clubs available on ebay. Get some old balls find an empty field and practice hitting to targets. Then when you can consistently make good contact , learn how far the different clubs go and keep the ball on or close to target, its time to take it to the course. spend lots of time on the practice green, chipping and putting then go play. Also I highly recommend learning the etiquette of golf. how to fix divots and ball marks etc. first

looks like everybody’s got you covered for clubs and driving range, so heres my two cents:

look in the phone book for the nearest par 3 or “pitch and putt” course. These are shorter courses (only par threes – no par 4 or 5′s) and cost way less then a full course. Par 3′s are about $12 in mhy area (southern cal).

The thing with the par 3 is you dont really need a full set of clubs – just a putter, a wedge and maybe a 9 iron – you can get those a used sporting good stores way cheap.

Par 3′s are a great place to learn the game, and most people will tell you that the short game (shots inside 100-150 yards) is where the great players score.

Play the par 3′s while you save up for a driver and full set – it wont break the bank while you see if you really like golf.
