Does cold storage have any affect on golf clubs?
I store my clubs in my unheated garage during the winter. I was told today that I should store them in a heated area as the cold isn't good for the shafts. Does anyone know if this statement has any substance. It does get to 20 below zero here sometimes.

ya i would keep them inside because with the cold air you take risk of having some hairline cracks inside the shafts especially with graphite shafts but i have always kept mine inside to prevent anything stupid from having them

The cold will wear the clubs down and make them vulnerable for breaking. You should store them somewhere in your house. I store my clubs in my basement during the Michigan winter.

I have never read anything from any of the manufacturers that cold has an adverse effect. However I have always stored mine inside. I always figured I didn’t like the cold….I didn’t think my clubs would either. lol

When I bought my first set of clubs, I didn’t pay that much for them. They were a set from Wal-Mart. I stored them in my storage area that was on my patio. It wasn’t well insulated, but it kept them dry. I didn’t notice any difference in them when I started playing with them in the spring. I moved and got a set of Mizuno irons and where I lived didn’t have storage outside except for the balcony and I wasn’t going to leave them out there. I’ve kept them inside ever since. I have a complete Nike set now. Cold weather has adverse affects on most things. It gets cold here, but it hasn’t been 20 below here, but we’ve had a wind chill that cold. I would think there would be some adverse affect to the way the clubs performed if they experienced varying temperatures so I would store them indoors if possible.

It really isn’t the cold that is the problem. The problem is cooling, reheating, cooling, reheating, cooling, reheating….you get the idea. I always keep my clubs in an area that has minimal temperature change. I also keep my bicycles inside during the winter as well for the same reason. These are expensive tools so I try to minimize potential damage any way I can. Great question.

Diesel has the right idea.
According to both Golf Digest and Golf Magazine- extreme cold and heat will degrade the epoxy that holds the club together, cause the grip to dry out and crack and disrupt the integrity of a graphite shaft.
The Golf Guru for GD also said it was just plain dumb to keep them outside (in your garage or storage shed) or in the trunk of your car. Clubs are expensive, and risking theft or unnecessary damage should be avoided.
