What is Wrong With My Golf Game?
hello, i'm a 17 year old golfer who normally averages from the low to high 90's.
its now spring, and i have came out of my cave and started playing golf again, however there is somthing that is really starting to annoy me.
my drives have been perfect, same with my irons, and any shots with my wedges that require a full swing. but any short chips i have been chunking the ground...AND ITS BEEN ADDING FROM 1-3 STROKES PER HOLE BECAUSE OF THESE ANNOYING CHUNK SHOTS. What is this bad habbit, and why did it develop over the winter.
i've tried everything, switched from my sandwedge to pitching wedge, practicing from different angles....EVERYTHING and still no luck.
its so frustrating to have the rest of my game going as smoothe as possibe and this bogging everything down. its seriousally adding strokes to my game and i need help.
just thought i should mention that i'm hitting the ground way before the ball, and causing the club to bounce off the ground and skull the ball.
i also perform most of these shots w/ a 56 degree cleveland wedge, which i tilt up a little bit to get a little less loft

Well don’t close your club head b/c of course you are going to hit the ground first. This is going to be contrary to almost everything you have heard however it works well for me. So if you swing righty open up your left foot a decent amountand place the ball just inside your back foot. Place your hand slightly futher back than you would with your regular swing. Then take your swing and accually sway your hips a little bit on your back swing than sway forward on your downswing. Try and make contact with the ground and the ball at the same time. (note this should be a relatively soft swing) Pretty much the same motion for bunker shots. good luck.

I guess when you say you are tilting the club up a little bit to give it more loft you mean you are opening the blade slightly. If this is not what you are doing stop doing it and follow these tips. Grip down on your short clubs when making a less than full swing and this will stop the chunking that you’ve got going on. Concentrate on making solid contact which will require that you stay in your posture and avoid dipping. Open the club face slightly to help prevent the pulls that normally occur when a player is taking less than a full swing. Practise some short shots to get the feel and you should have your problems solved. The key to solid short game mechanics is a short grip and an open face. Good luck.

The area that wiil always show the most winter rust is extreme short game. My advice is don’t change anything for a while…..The rust will come off and you will be just fine. Just make sure you are not getting too handsy on your chips.

i would say just simply try moving forward a bit so that the ball is closer to ur right foot than in the middle (assuming that with a high loft wedge the ball is usually at about center between ur feet) this should make u get contact with the ball instead of digging a hole into the ground. if this doesnt work u can try to look at a spot ahead of the ball and this will help u swing through the ball instead of thinking u need to get into the ball, i hope that makes sense lol i cant really think of how to word that just look ahead of the ball instead of at it.
