Republicans and corruption: what do you feel about this?

"Former Rep. Bob Ney was sentenced Friday to 2 1/2 years in federal prison for trading political favors for gifts and campaign donations from lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
"Ney, the first congressman ensnared in the lobbying scandal, pleaded guilty in October to conspiracy and making false statements. He admitted being corrupted by golf trips, tickets, meals and campaign donations from Abramoff." (yahoo news)
It goes on to say:
"The gifts Ney received ranged from a trip to Scotland bankrolled by Abramoff's clients to thousands of dollars in gambling chips that Ney got on two overseas junkets from foreign businessman Fouad al-Zayat, a Syrian-born aviation company owner in Cyprus."
Is this an isolated incident? Was the sentence too harsh, or not enough? And what is a Republican doing parading with a Syrian?
This isn't a baited question, so I'm not going for your choice in the party you may or may not support. It just seems like something is going wrong in the Republican party.

Nothing is any more wrong with the Republican party than the Democrats or liberals or independents. They all have there own views. Campains are never run correcty and without bribes and all the crap that goes with it. AMERICA better wake up before it’s too late. We are THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, not the SEPARATE PARTIES OF AMERICA.

Who cares? Corruption has been a major part of politics/Govt. since they were invented. Mark Twain called US Govt. legalized criminals and I think he got it exactly right. You want to stop corruption in Govts. any Govts? Keep Govts very, very SMALL and have strict term limits for anyone involved in Govt.
