What is a good first car?

Albert F. asked:

I have 2 cars right now, Suzuki Esteem 1999 and Volkswagon Golf 2000. I am selling the Esteem, and maybe keeping the Golf (it has much work done on it, like blow off valves, cold air intake, speed chipped, turbocharged, etc.), but I thinking to sell the Golf and get a new car. Any good first cars?
I was thinking: Honda Civic 2002, Mitsubishi Eclipse 2002, or even a 2001 Nissan Skyline

What are you going to use the car for?

The choices you listed are 3 very different cars. Good luck getting a 2001 Nissan Skyline.

A 2002 Civic (even in a coupe version) has a useable back seat and is fairly practical. The Eclipse is pretty much a 2-seater, the back seat is useless. The Skyline isn’t readily available on the used car market since they weren’t originally sold in America.

I bought a 2008 Kia Optima with a lot of options and low mileage from Carmax and love it. Paid it off early, too.

Avoid anything from Japan or Korea because they have high repair costs and will often leave you with nothing to drive while you wait for ordered parts to come in. The also don’t last as long as American or European cars. Even the ones “assembled” in America are built with low quality imported Japanese parts .

That fact being said I suggest a Chevy Camaro, Pontiac Solstice, Corvette or Ford Mustang for sports cars.

Chevy Cobalt, Chevy Malibu or Ford Focus for practical cars.

Jeep Liberty for off road fun.

If you prefer an imported car go with Mercedes, Audi, or VW they will be a LOT more reliable than Japanese or Korean.
