practice better golf?

hahahaha asked:

Hi i just turned 17 and i am going to be a junior this year. I am an 8 handicap but know i need to get alot bettter. I would like to play D1 golf, perferably at BYU. Can a good, young golfer tell me how much i need to practice (hours per day) and how long it took them to get as good as they are? Also some practice tips/drills would be helpful.

THanks

How about a golfer who has been around? I can tell you that the best golfers period these days practice as much as they can. This does not just mean off the mats at the driving range. Get some “playing lessons” with a teacher on the course (invaluable). Golf is not played off a flat mat- it requires good knowledge of playing difficult lies, weird punch shots, and trusting your club and ability to make such a shot. This cannot be done unless you have the ability to practice such a shot. For example how do you think Phil M. learned how to hit a backwards shot off a bank? He had to figure it out, and practice this type of shot. Even the most mundane shot that you might learn will possibly be nice to have in your skill set someday. Good luck, and I wish you well learning and loving this wonderful game. Also on a side note…practice humility…not every shot is learned right away, be ok with practicing a shot that went errant.

Try to play at least 4 times per week. Take notes as you practice and play to capture ideas.

I say GO FOR IT! If you get 150 “No, you can’t” and you get 1 “Yes, you qualify and your in”, then are you willing to do what it takes to get there?

I would eat, sleep and breathe every stroke and even throw in some mental exercises, such as seeing yourself competing in ‘THE’ game.
If you do some research on the net, you can find this story, there was a prison of war, in Vietnam, and everyday he played a round of golf IN HIS MIND. And when he was released, he did play a great game of golf back home in America.

I used my buddy’s videos to program my mind. I watch the videos so much, that I could see each frame by frame in my mind. Yes, I have cut strokes off my game My buddy Sam got them from here:

To your D1 game! Cheers! Go for it! Never ever quit!
