More Consistency in my Golf game?

J-Dawg12324 asked:

I've been playing golf for about a year now. And everyday it's not raining I'm constantly at the golf course practicing. But it seems like my game's not getting any better. The problem I'm having is my consistency. I can usually hit my 8 iron about 155 when I hit it solid and straight. And when I don't hit is solid it's either a draw, hook, or I blade it. And it usually brings my yardage down to about 135 with an 8 Iron. But that's my problem. I'm not hitting it solid every time like I should be. One shot will be in the sweet spot. the next will be off the toe and the next will be off the heel. I know it's not possible to hit it perfectly every shot. But still I would be happy hitting it solidly 7 out of 10 times. But right now I'm probably hitting it about 2 out of 10. What's up with this. Any tips will be helpful and very appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Always, when you hit bad shots, its because of you club at impact.
So, if you hit one straight shot, remember what you did at impact,
    Did you turn your wrist?
    Did you push the ball?
Did you try to lift the ball?
    Hope this helps

Shorten up your swing a bit and don’t swing so hard – make sure you do accelerate through the ball though.

Pros hit most shots about 75% of how hard they could hit it. Don’t swing like John Daly or Tiger Woods. They hit thousands of balls a month and have been doing so for many years with expensive coaches.

Hitting an 8 iron consistently 140 yards and straight would be a whole lot better than not knowing if it’s going to go 155 or 135.

Allow your left side (if you’re right handed) to be in control and your right side to be tucked in and following. Overpowering with the right will lead to bladed and heeled shots. Don’t let the right elbow come over. Tuck it into your ribs.

Consistency is all about doing the same things over and over again. Start with the basics.
Pre shot routine…look behind your ball to your target and choose the line. find something a foot or two in front of your ball on that line as your “intermediate” target.
Line up your club face square to your intermediate target…use a 2×4 or club shaft on the ground. Take your stance and sole your club with the face up against the 2×4 or shaft. This will be what a square club face looks like. Line up the shoulders square to your target line. They should look as if they are left or your target about 5 or 6 yards.
Place your grip on the club the same way every time.
Take your club back using your front shoulder as your guide for the swings length. A full swing will have your shoulder behind the ball at the top of your swing. A lack of shoulder turn becomes just an arm swing and bad things can happen.
Follow through with your swing the same way every time. The arms rotate the same way, the hips turn through the shot and the belt buckle faces the target…every time.
Doing the same things every time builds consistency. Good luck my friend.

your irons may be on the wrong lie. you may be too tall or short for your irons. you should check your irons with an expert golfer. or the other option is to keep practicing.

Lessons and practice are the only path to consistency. Even the folks who play on TV on Sundays have swing coach’s…..why not you?

Well J-Dawg it looks like Vanessa may have the key to your inconsistency. You practice diligently and are still having more than your share of mis hits. You owe it to yourself to have a club fitting to see if the clubs you are using actually fit your swing. You can practice all you want but if the clubs don’t fit you are fighting a losing battle. Do yourself a favour and get fit as soon as possible and get your clubs adjusted to your swing.

It’s not just practice; it’s practicing the right things, and the only way to find out what those right things are is to take lessons. I struggled for years and finally took 2 sets of 5 lessons last year. Went from an 18 to a 10. Now it’s all short game for me. Best money I ever spent. Good luck!

Rhythm or bad rhythm is the #1 cause of bad shots and inconsistency. Its something that just has to develop. You have to find a sequence in the swing (sequence of positions, movements, swing thoughts…whatever) that you can repeat, in time, every time, with your full swing.

    Examples:
Slow and low on the back swing (in the same tempo, for every full shot)
Pause for a ¼ second at the top (again for every full shot)
Start down with your left hip (right handed), left knee, and a pulling action with you left hand (in time, for every full shot)….bla bla bla…

Swing in a consistent rhythm on the course. Don’t jerk or grab the club too tight.

Most golfers are inconsistent and I am one of them. If I control my swing through better timing and try to blot out the bad thoughts which invariably enter my mind I hit the ball solidly and with confidence.I find it amazing that there can be considerable differences between shots and one cannot pinpoint the reason.

I am a golf teaching professional, and I wrote a book to address the very issue you are experiencing. In it I talk about what I call the “1 in 10 factor”. In your case it just happens to be 2 in 10. What is happening is you are hitting up at the ball, whether wittingly or not. Because you are probably pretty athletic and talented by the sounds of it, you are managing to successfully hit up once in a while. But I am afraid that is the best the odds will ever be, because it is just too difficult to hit up at a small object that is situated below you, and is usually sitting on (or in) grass.

You have to work on hitting down at the golf ball. While it may seem counter-intuitive, it’s not that hard to do once you get the hang of it. But then, your shot success will go up to about 7 or 8 out of 10, and the shots will be better too. I will list below some articles you can read, and also the site where my book is available. If you have any further questions you can always reach me through my website.

Your issue is probably releasing the club too early, or “flipping” the club at the bottom. When this happens the clubhead gets in front of your hands before impact, exposing the bottom of the club to the ball and causing the face to shut down. Hence your blades and hooks. The fix is to start the downswing with your lower body and keep your hands and wrists vary passive, or “quiet” until impact. You likely feel as if you swing hard with your hands and wrists, and the key is to feel as if you hit it further by turning faster through the ball, with the hands and wrists going along for the ride. Look at all the guys on tour who hit a fade, and they all do it by turning through the ball but holding the clubhead back by not releasing the wrists.

i haven’t been a golfer for that long, but whenever you hit a bad shot,
or you play a bad hole it is always important to keep a short
memory, b/c every stroke counts. so don’t let one bad shot
mess you up on your game.

and if your not improving then your not changing anything.
the point of practicing is to improve your swing more and more
each time, so as you learn more about the golf swing you need
    to try different things.

In order to help me with my contact I practice chipping the ball (the right way)
helps me get in my groove :) !

    *hope I helped!!
